I have 9600 ATI Radeon card.

I installed the program and it didnt work.

I downloaded the latest drivers from ati. Didnt help.

I dropped my colour depth down to 16 bit, that also did nothing.

I deleted, then reinstalled the program, that did nothing.

I downloaded the recommended plug ins and that didnt help either.

I dont have the Z-buffer option.

Here is a image of my 3d properties...

OK, i dropped the resolution to 1024x768 whilst using the GLN 0.4.1 and i never got any error messages but when i tried to load a rom i just got a black screen, when i changed back to the original graphic plugin Jabo Direct3d6 1.5.1 i then got the error messages

I have tried everything as well...the only thing that has worked for me is uninstalling P64 and installing 1964.

RJARRRPCGP

The Rocking PC Wiz
I know what the cause is, by looking at the GFX plugin error log, it ALWAYS wants to use the 32-bit Z-buffer. Apparently, with Catalyst 4x, the 32-bit Z-buffer is disabled by default.

The N64 MANIAC!
where can I find the latest drivers for my video card?(apollo 3d thrill 315)I have searched everywhere but I found only the old drivers.I once got them but I unninstalled them By mistake

Yes this solution worked for me. Thank you very much:

1) Right click desktop and go to properties
2) Go to the last tab on the right (advanced I think)
3) Click properties
4) Go to 3D tab, and ensure D3D is selected
5) Go to the compatability tab near the bottom and select:
Support 32bit Z Buffer (top option)

Then apply that.

Look, for some people, there just IS NO 32BIT Z-BUFFER OPTION. And no amount of installing other drivers and reinstalling DirectX has or will change that. What's needed is a change to Jabo's plugin. Period.

This post was intended for people with a Radeon card of the same class I was using - to which it will work 100%.

When graphics fails to startup it produces an error log (at least it should?) in a directory called 'Logs', if you paste that error onto ET it would be a lot more helpful, it's possible not everyone is having the same problem, especially for those of you who may not have ATI Radeon cards (stating this is helpful)

Also telling us what color depth you run, I always assume 32-bit..

There's an error report, but not in a directory called "Logs":

[11:01:04 AM 16/8/2004] Error 0x8876017C - Error creating 3D rendering surface

From my understanding, recent Radeons just don't have support for a 32-bit Z-buffer. All that's needed is an option to use a 16/24-bit Z-buffer. I've tried using both 16 and 32 bit color depths, it doesn't fix the problem.

Yeah, that could be true, but regardless, that error code is "out of video memory", and it is before the z-buffer is created... so I wouldn't worry about 32-bit depth buffers quite just yet, you haven't gotten that far in the initialization (and just for reference, 16-bit desktop under most scenarios uses a 16-bit zbuffer)

Anyone have any ideas why he would be getting this kind of error ?
Could you state specifically what kind of hardware you have ? Drivers, etc.

Athlon XP 2500+ (1.8ghz Barton), 512 MB of RAM, Asus A7N8X Deluxe motherboard, Sapphire Radeon 9600 with 256 MB of video RAM. I can use several Rice plugins and the Glide64 plugin without issue.

I get the same error that Karasu posted even after enabling 32-bit Z-Buffers. There is a DirectDraw6 Error.log file created and it has the following contents:

[1:25:25 AM 17/8/2004] Error creating Z-Buffer code = 80004001 (32 / FFFFFFFF)
[1:25:59 AM 17/8/2004] Error creating Z-Buffer code = 80004001 (32 / FFFFFFFF)
[1:40:03 AM 17/8/2004] Error creating Z-Buffer code = 80004001 (32 / FFFFFFFF)
[1:42:50 AM 17/8/2004] Error creating Z-Buffer code = 80004001 (32 / FFFFFFFF)
[11:07:07 AM 17/8/2004] Error creating Z-Buffer code = 80004001 (32 / FFFFFFFF)
[11:07:46 AM 17/8/2004] Error creating Z-Buffer code = 80004001 (32 / FFFFFFFF)

I am running Cat 4.9s on a Radeon 9100 w/ Win2k. Athlon XP 1.4GB 1GB SDR PC133 ;o.

Hmm, well, there is an interesting problem there, the error code is "unsupported", this could mean they haven't added it to your card yet, or you it needs a reboot to take effect

at the end of the day, someone has to fix something, either ati has to fix this in their drivers, or I have to provide a little stronger error handling to compensate for the fact the drivers are lying about supporting 32-bit z-buffers (which obviously wasnt the case a few years ago) ..

if you change your desktop to 16-bit it should fix the problem.. in the mean time
