What's new

Nintendo Wii sells like zomg

Useless question, fanboy typical.
Quite not!

A lot of people have a DVD player, but doesn't mean it is available for use.
The more ways you get to do the same thing, the best for you.

I already went to travel and took my console with me, so I could play during the travel. And oh, the place I went didn't have DVD players. What if my console would read DVDs?

Definitely, Wii is a great console, I like it a lot. I just think that Nintendo could be smarter and make it more versatile. Not to mention that both other systems will read DVD. Oh yeah, two old systems ALSO read DVD. Only Nintendo is behind.

Now they're planning to launch a new Wii model (DVD playback capable) NEXT YEAR. NEXT YEAR? Why would I buy it now then? People is only buying Wii because it is new. And I can bet that a lot of persons don't know that Wii can't reproduce DVD. That new came out on November 17th, two days before the launch. Like they were afraid with such decision of disabling DVD playback.

Your rage is misplaced. Want to see DVDs on the move? Well, get a stupid portable DVD player then! I would rather not pay for all the extra DVD licensing crap so I can watch DVDs on it. I have a DVD player... I have a PC... What's the deal?
That is one thing I like with Nintendo - they don't force thing on us like Sony or Microsoft. If I want DVD, I can pay a little extra LATER to get it instead of getting it forced upon me when I'm never going to use it.

For that matter, I'm sure there's a cheap DVD player you can find that's portable as well.

All in all, I'd like to see this thing flop. Nintendo's dropped the ball too many times now, and Sega pretty much got shoed out of the industry for less mistakes than what Nintendo's made/making.
Ah, the Sony lover....
Sega was pushed out because of poor financials and Sony's dominating PS2.
It seems to me you can't accept that Nintendo is doing something new.

Actually, it was the piracy of Dreamcast games that did them in. Might I suggest doing your research? And as far as I can tell, there isn't much advancement between say, Mario Sunshine and Mario Universe. Looks like pretty much the same crap to me. Sorry to burst the Wii bubble, but they aren't doing anything new. A gimmicky controller is hardly a "revolution".;)

Well, let's look at it this way...
Sega has little money left over the competition with Sega, Playstation and Ninty's console (SNES, N64?). Sega now badly needs money.
However, the PS2 dominates the market. Sega doesn't get much money. Piracy does them in. Same thing.

And as far as I can tell, there isn't much advancement between say, Mario Sunshine and Mario Universe. Looks like pretty much the same crap to me. Sorry to burst the Wii bubble, but they aren't doing anything new. A gimmicky controller is hardly a "revolution".;)

A "gimmicky" controller means more fun. And it's a stray from the stupid more power, more graphics, more shiny! I find that controller very promising. A new way of doing things instead of the traditional controller. I have to agree, it's actually much more fun to slash your controller across the room instead of pressing a button to swing a sword.
And let's face it - the regular controller scares many people. Plus Nintendo is pretty much the only company who really tries to capture the non-gamers, or introduce newcomers to the video game world. Can't say that for Sony or Microsoft.

You know the meaning of versatility, don't you?

What's the point of having a pocket DVD player and a console when actually I can have all in one?

Don't get me wrong, I buy videogame machines to play games not to watch DVD movies. But understand that the entertainment world evolved, DVD is a cheap media entertainment nowadays, even old gen consoles like PS2 and Xbox use DVD. The more flexibility I have with a console, more entertainment I'll have.

Imagine yourself back in 1994 when Sega Saturn was launched. I guess you didn't buy it because it is also able to read musics CDs? And you didn't buy a PS2 because it is able to read DVD? Or even a DVD player that reads MPEG video format/JPEG files? For all that you'd use the proper artifact to use those medias?

It seems to me you can't accept that Nintendo is doing something new.
Great new, not including good and useful technology on their new console.

I'd rather not. The controller is ankward for playing DVDs anyway. I have a DVD player and I'm fine with that. Don't need any console to play 'em. A video game machine is a video game machine. A dvd player is a dvd player.

No, I didn't. I never bought any sega console, which is a sad truth, though I would have liked Sega Genesis. And no I didn't buy a PS2 for DVD playback capabilities. I have gotten one only RECENTLY and only for games.

Great new, not including good and useful technology on their new console.

Screw DVD, get yourself a DVD player mate. They're probably better at playing DVDs anyway. You know that the PS2 had inferior DVD quality?

The way you say it's like I'd buy a Wii just because I want to watch DVDs. :plain:

I am stating that Nintendo should use of this so common and useful technology. Period.

Doomulation

I am ashamed that you do not see that we don't need this. It will increase the cost of the unit and we'll probably have no use for it.

And I am ashamed that your fanboyism is blinding you to see that Nintendo only loses with this decision. It won't increase the cost of the unit the way you think it will, and some of us could use DVD-playback capabilities.

Doomulation

?????????????????????????
It isn't fanboy-ism. It is gratitude. I see no use for a DVD player on the console and it lowers the cost a tad (and I am grateful for that, since I don't want to pay for things I don't use).
And, as always, there ARE other products that are DESIGNED for this very purpose that you want them for and they are often much better than all-in-one solutions. Go figure.
If I want my console to play DVDs. then I can pay a little extra to cover those fees that are attached to it. Otherwise, I don't need to. That is something I find a very good thing. And yes, I find it a shame that Nintendo won't release an extension to the console to play DVDs for those who want it instead of a brand new console.

I'm used to controllers. I've used them for 20+ years now. Why fix what isn't broken? Besides, all you have to do is look at the issues that arise from such a new gimmick (glare on the screen can really screw up controls, etc..), to realize it's not all it's cracked up to be.;)

I must admit that it would have been nice to be able to play DVDs with it, but that would have increased the price. Nintendo wants to keep the price low, so they left it out. If you really need it to play DVDs, I read Nintendo is releasing a new Wii with DVD functionality later.

Oh yeah, of course. And I am Ghandi, pleased to meet you.

I see no use for a DVD player on the console and it lowers the cost a tad (and I am grateful for that, since I don't want to pay for things I don't use).
DVD tech is dirty cheap nowadays. If it was that expensive, PS2 and Xbox would have the very same price they had when they were released.

And, as always, there ARE other products that are DESIGNED for this very purpose that you want them for and they are often much better than all-in-one solutions. Go figure.
I'll quote myself to reply this one.

Wow, the Wii lacks dvd playability, OMFG! Now instead of having eleven dvd players I only have ten, theres no way I can ever play my dvds now... all hope is lost! Waaaaaaaaaaaaah!

Come now, you've got to have a better reason than that to diss the thing, I litterally have ten dvd players, in one form or another so why do I need another one, tell me that? If you're traveling, the wii will do you no good anyway since it doesn't have a portable screen! When you arrive at a place where you can use the Wii, guess what! theres a DVD player there, they are everywhere, your entire logic for travel fails.

As for Generalplots "I wanted it to flop" thing - it hasn't flopped so your wishes have failed, thank god for that.

The solution is obvious, get a scart switcher and have all your stuff plugged into it and use your dvd player to play the movies, if you ask me, the wii not playing the movies means the laser is used less which means the wii will last longer. The motors for the laser don't have to move as often, the laser won't ware out as fast... etc

Besides it not being able to play DVD's has been known practically since the start, too late to do anything about it now so STFU about it and talk about the real subjects that matter, like How is it, whats it like to play? Whining about the lack of the DVD support isn't going to make it magically work in the systems, and if its really that big of a deal don't buy it, I don't see why I need an eleventh dvd player.

The only system you can really state that with so far is the 360 IMO. The PS3 and the Wii haven't had enough time on the marketplace nor a steady enough stock to say otherwise. Of course they are going to sell out on day 1, week 1, even month 1. The true test is time, and neither have had that.

Might as well say the Dreamcast/Saturn/Gamecube/N64 were all brilliant successes. They all sold out on day 1 I'm sure *probably the Saturn being the exception* (strictly speaking they of course were not total flops either).

Nintendo have done with the home console what they've done with their DS, make something that is truely unique and innovative and at an affordable price, I don't see it flopping, however the PS3 has a huge chance of that. No enough units to supply demand, loads of bad press - high price - but at least it will become my eleventh dvd player which is after all, the only thing that matters... gotta have LOTS and LOTS of dvd players, theres no point having just 1... noooooo gotta catch em all.

Speculation is irrelevant, anyway. I know one thing for sure, I'm buying me one, dvd player or not :D

You are not seeing the picture. It isn't a "fix" for controllers. They aren't that bad. Still, it is something NEW and EXCITING. As I mentioned above, in my example. It's more fun to swing your hand to mimick a sword rather than press a button. And maybe controllers are easy for us, but I know someone who had a very hard time playing a game with the GC controller.

It's something NEW that brings new EXPERIENCES. Tell me how Sony and Microsoft is doing that.

@Mire: Think what you want about fanboy-ism; obviously you aren't listening.
Point being, to support DVD, not only do you need the hardware to do it, but you need to pay LICENSING FEES which are not always so cheap.
Again, I quote myself, I need not a Wii Dvd Player when there are lots of other players. Functionality you don't need, you shouldn't have to pay for.

I'm agreeing with Scott. Why the heck do I need a Wii Dvd Player when I already got ... umm, let's see.... 1 for the PC, 2 for the PS2 and 3 for the actual dvd player (which can play Div/Xvid BTW, which the Wii Dvd player probably won't; hence when I say that stand alone products are often better than all-in-one)?

Yeah. I have a DVD player on my laptop, two on my desktop as well as a standalone DVD player. There are also another DVD player in the house, which I don't own. I usually play DVDs on my laptop or desktop rather than the standalone player, so I wouldn't use a console as a DVD player.

I'm not sure of the validity of the NexGen Wars site, but it appears that the Wii has sold all the units allocated to the United States.

Four pages and not a single impresson on a game, only this DVD crap, Sony may be right, we don´t want to play games, we want to whine about multiMedia support.

And that´s the thought that made the DS out sell the PSP in 300%.

What console has games that does NOT suck? What's your point?

Have you even tested the new controller? You're just one of these who just can't accept what's new. Oh, and I guess you hate the whole motion sensitivity in the PS3 controller too?
Yeah, keep telling yourself lies.
