What's new

Umm... it isn't detecting anything

My friend sent me this file and when I went to use it, it told me to set a video, audio, and controller plugin, so when it opened up the options and I clicked the drop-down list, it was completely blank! I have been having troubles with my sound (Windows won't register it's there, but my games will), but never has it been this bad. I tried for help at another forum (help with the sound, not the program), but no luck, they eventually buried my post, so now that this has come up, I am asking you, since it may have gotten worse O_O

What are your computer specs? Update DirectX, update sound/video card drivers

No...

I haven't deleted anything, and the sound wasn't working when I got it from my mom at least 6 or 8 months ago, and although I got it in a file transfer, I did not get it in a .zip file, I just got the .exe, is that bad? Lol, that might be the problem with the emulator, but not the problem with my sound...

p.s. Why do I see that little wizard on every forum I go to? o_O

It depends on which .exe you're talking about. You said your friend sent it to you. When you ran it, did it install PJ64 onto your computer (which you could then run after installing) or did it just open the emulator window and complain about missing plugins? If the latter is the case, then your friend only gave you part of the emulator (the main program executable to be precise - sans plugins, RDB file, etc.). Go to the official site to download the complete package.

/facepalm

How so? I admit it is odd that Windows does not recognise that I have sound, yet games do, but it is nonetheless true.

@Toasty
I realized my error in that I only had the program and not the installer and went to download the installer, I simply assumed that my friend sent me the whole thing. Said friend goes by the name of "Madcap" or possibly "Madcap22"

...and yes, you just got pwned by intelligent speech.

Just what do you mean by "Windows doesn't recognize that I have sound, yet games do"?

That's a bit like me saying, "The power is out, but if I fiddle around with the switches enough, some of my AC lights will still turn on."

What I mean

From what I have gleaned, there appears to be a program handling my onboard sound, rather than a piece of hardware. I figured this out by simply opening Windows Media Player, it tells me I have no sound hardware.
From what I am assuming, Windows tries to look for the hardware, but can't find it, because/even though the motherboard handles it in this case. The games simply send the sound without checking for hardware or drivers first, at least, this is what I think.

I do, however, have an icon in my tool tray that belongs to C-Media, as the tooltip reads "C-Media Audio Configuration". I think this is of some importance, on the other forum I used to go to, I think they mentioned something about C-Media. I have bad memory, hence the repeated "I think".

There's a piece of hardware - without it you wouldn't have anything to plug speakers/headphones into. Even if this piece of hardware is integrated into your motherboard, it is a piece of hardware nonetheless. The 'program' that controls this hardware is a driver. The driver abstracts the device-specific functions of the hardware so that other programs can access it in the same way they would access any other sound card. All other programs access the sound hardware through these drivers.

If Windows can't load drivers for a device, then the programs running in Windows won't be able to use that device. Period.

Probably the best way to figure out where the problem is would be to ask what programs do work with sound and what programs don't? (Specific error messages would be of help as well.)
