The button placement doesn't seem awkward to me, but I'm curious how the analog pad works... it looks like something might pop out or something. I'm not sure it will have the sensitivity of the PSX/PS2 analog... but at least it has analog... should make for a good portable racing game. I hate the steering on standard digital pads.

No it does not, thats what surface mount is for.

Dude, you need the space on the rest of the PCB to route traces to the part you're mounting. Or do you think mounting an unconnected port will be effective?

And besides, with the parts there as-is, you can't fit a stereo headphone jack anyway. You'd have to move things. The space you pointed out as "I can fit two here!" - you CAN'T move anything in that area without breaking compatibility with GCN-GBA link cables... so would you rather have a dongle for headphones, or have to buy two separate cables for your GBA classic and your GBA-SP to link to the GCN?

It's all about the layout design. The engineers could have worked it in there if they wanted to without breaking compatibility. Quit being a fangirl :D

will you two get the fuck over it, you're one sad fucker if that's your only complaint about the GBASP

Well, I didn't expect to get flamed for no reason by a moderator, but that isn't a complaint, just a rant. I already own a classic GBA, and I have no reason to buy a GBA-SP in the first place. That rant originally stemmed from this. Anyways, if it is going to lead to more flaming, then I will say no more (I mostly just think the petty argument is funny anyways :D ).

I have every reason to flame you for doing to death one of the most petty complaints in recent times, but that was just a match compared to me when I'm on form (which is rare these days)

also as an aside, am I in the minority when I think Penny Arcade isn't what it was, it's not funny anymore it's just dumb.

The music quality on a GBA is inferior to that of a SNES, more Megadrive quality (compare GBA Tales of Phantasia and SNES ToP for a quick comparison). Never in my entire life would I consider GBA music seriously good enough to use headphones. I'd just look really stupid going down the street listening to the handheld!

If the GBAs sound chip was better than or equal to a SNES, I'd understand! Even Golden Sun's music would grate after around 30 minutes.

The PSP audio quality is likely to be very good, so I would understand people using heaphones here.

Still it's expensive as hell and draws battery power as hell. Those factors are what stands in its way atm.

I was watching something the other day, and they were talking about some laptop computer or other that had the battery power to run a couple of DVD movies consecutively without dying.

So, the batteries are slowly getting there. :)

It does use a rechargeable lithium ion battery and current estimates floating around are about 5 hours of battery life... so if you are obsessive and play the thing all day, just get a second battery.

That isn't battery efficiency... that's "Laptop powers down everything not necessary to play the DVD" efficiency.

they do that all the time unless they're on mains power.

In full-screen DVD mode, even the graphics chip shuts down almost everything and goes into insanely low-power mode. Basically if the laptop tried to operate anything other than DVD video at that kind of speed it'd be like using a 486 + CGA.

Are you all so picky about audio? GBA's audio is completly fine! I can use headphones just fine! The gba has nice tunes just as snes; being lower quality doesn't change this fact. The sound may be lower quality, but IMO that's nothing to complain about!
Bah...the audio's just fine. I've played 1 or 2 hours in a row sometime (because of the good games ^_^) without tiring on the sound.

You don't get the point. I can play for a LOOOONG time on the gba without recharging the batteries, but duh, I don't want to recharge every day; it takes about 14 hours to recharge. Besides that, some people just don't use rechargable batteries...
so, lower the battery usage already! I'm sure they'll come with some concrete method to do so...in time, that is.

Sony still hasn't announced the battery life so it might be 8 hours for all we know. But I'm sure that it won't take 14 hours to recharge... more like 5. What's wrong with rechargeable batteries??? Do you have a customized cell phone that can use 2 AA's? Anyway, until Duracel comes out with new AA batteries, new high-tech devices use too high a voltage to use a couple of batteries. And how is it such a burdeon to recharge the thing at night? Even if you forget to unplug it the next day it won't overcharge.

What's wrong with rechargeable batteries? Have fun replacing or charging the screw-protected battery during a 9 hour trans-Atlantic flight when the battery only lasts about 5 hours. And PSP is too powerful, and disc drives do take power to spin... and if they go low-power with a slow drive, that'll increase load times and waste more battery life. Etc. That's why all the speculation of a low life time, unless the battery weighs a LOT.

I'm sure you're not going to have to unscrew anything to put a fresh recharged battery in. I had an early-model Sony Discman than only used a custom rechargeable battery and battery life was only about 5 hours so I just got a second battery. And people who travel often can just get an AC adapter that works on planes... like you can do with laptops. Anyone who says that 5 hours of battery life is not enough is really saying that the thing is so amazing that it would be a trajedy if something prevented them from using it all day long.

actually with the advancements of battery technology and power saving technology, I kind of expect a decent battery life now

Actually, battery technology technology has hardly advanced worth shit in the last decade compared to everything else.
