Moderator Smiffy says I can't talk about third party plugins that are not
bundeled with project 64 , but I can tell you this ...

After extensive testing of all the third party plugins available
in an attempt to see wich works best for my Nvidia BFG 6800 Ultra
I discovered that Jabo's D3D8 works best and does NOT suffer from

1. Missing lense flares
2. Missing Coronas on Castle Flames in Zelda Oot and MQ
3. FAA and ASS failure
4. Tree tops in Hyrule Field incorrect

ALL of the other plugins I've used have the above mentioned problems.

I suspect this would be the solution for ATI owners as well.

You can mention other plugins - you just shouldn't post bug reports that are non PJ64 bundled plugin related. You can of course mention that maybe 1 plugin emulates a feature that Jabos doesn't.

Trotter You are THE MAN !

Hey there trotter I didn't even know you were watching :icecream:

you impress me beyond words , your dedicated to the cause.

I would love to rap with you about your views on why all the other plugins
seem to have the errors I mentioned and would like to know why jabo's D3D8
plugin seems to work so well ?

Any ideas on why the other plugins seem to be broken for Nvidia users ?

Lord help me for sayin this but jabo's D3D8 would be perfect if it had
the 2x smooth filter that rice beta 10 has ...

So please if you know why clue me in ...

PS. thanks for helping me with the forum rules , I'm trying to get to the bottom of things and don't know when I'm crossing the line sometimes
I can't tell you how much I appreciate the kidness and respect.

Basicaly I'm asking for any technical details I can get on the default Jabo's
D3D8 plugin that comes with Project 64 , sinse is seems to work so well

Going out now, but a quick answer. Other plugins may be broken due to the drivers - Nvidia are kinda notorious for releasing drivers that seem to conflict with N64 plugins (for some reason). Or it could just be the plugin doesn't work for that effect on any card.

You may want to give something like Glide64 with the included wrapper a try, that should work a treat on a GF6800.

Deep Thought

I had to really think about your response trotter ...
Glide64 latest with no wrapper was a bust
I've not tried it with a wrapper ...

What versions do you recommend ? I'm sure you mean the latest ?

I'm gonna load it up and give it a whirl , pardon my euphemisms lol

The reason I thought long and hard about your reply was that I remember that wrappers are slower when used with the now dead ULTRA_HLEz
that I used when I had a voodoo 3500 ... ya thats me I always seem to manage to get the most expensive graphics cards :p

whats a rich boy to do lol

I'm still gonna give it a shot see what happens

what had happened is I used Direct64 not Glide 64 , Direct 64 didn't need the wrapper ...

The wrapper included in the wrapper subfolder should work great (I was certain it came with the emulator). Without a wrapper there ain't a hope in hell of it working on an Nvidia card :D

Response on Glide64 with Wrapper.

I give it a big fat NO NO NO lol

No mistakes were made in the setup

but the visual problems were many ,

1. Black line at top of render window
2. Dither banding on the sky textures
3. just horrible on filtering

The author of Glide 64 also commented in his read me that he takes no
responsibility for the plugin and it's problems so out of luck there.

so back to jabo's D3D8 untill things get cleared up ...

I think it's a matter of digging into Jabo's D3D8 and finding out why it works
so well ...

Other than that , I WAS impressed with the on screen display
but whats more important is to get things right like coronas and flares

:icecream:

See those problems with Glide64 lead me to believe, you set it up incorrectly, you have some odd expectations or the Nvidia drivers ain't working properly.

Worth mentioning the wrapper has it's own config with filters.

The next version of Glide64 should include support for all the coronas, at least as far as I know. Anyways glad to hear that the D3D8 is working great for you.

It's been a long ruff night ...

Digging deeper into the code for Project 64 , I've discovered that
the project64.rdb Rom Data Base acts like a default ini for the emultaor

project64.rdn seems to act as an ini file for new roms found by the emulator

Question can one add code to either of these in say a quake3.cfg fassion
meaning quake 3 ini file ... where one just put in the options they wanted
to happen at run time ?

If it's possible to add code into the rdn what codes are acceptable
and are the codes limited to what the emulator understands ?

Mental Note: rice beta 10 uses BMGlib.dll to do it's drawing and filtering
and is not needed by Jabo's D3D8 1.6 .....

As for Direct64 and Glide64 and the wrappers that go with them
I think their total garbage because glide is DEAD DEAD DEAD
it died with 3dfx , this is today and today we use OpenGL 1.5 2.0
and DX9c wich will be DX10 when longhorn hits ...

but my question here is where can I get in contact with ANY of the people
who make the plugins for project 64 , and how can I edit those plugins
, I noted jabo's plugins are not hackable I can't get in there directly with a hack tool to do any good ...

In other words what will Project 64 allow me to do as far as a plugin is concerned ... how do I build my own plug in to fix the problem once and for all ?

Assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated ...

Because when I click contact us or any other link on www.pj64.net
they send me here so what gives ? how do I join the development team
if there is no response just a redirect ?

questions questions questions

Sorta correct. That file contains all the settings that each game uses.

Question can one add code to either of these in say a quake3.cfg fassion

Yes, that's possible. But not everything is. The file decides which settings games should use to run as good as possible. It does not affect user-seetings such as resolution.

Direct64 does not use Glide. Direct64 uses DirectX actually along with shaders. And as for Glide... it may be dead, but if you had a glide card and couldn't afford to buy another one, would you say the same thing? That's pretty much what started Glide64--no plugin would show good results on a voodoo card. And after Dave left, Gonetz has continued Glide64. And Gonetz wishes it to use voodoo. Go bug him if you don't like it.

but my question here is where can I get in contact with ANY of the people

Of course not! Do you even know how programming is done?

In other words what will Project 64 allow me to do as far as a plugin is concerned ... how do I build my own plug in to fix the problem once and for all ?
Haha... funny question that. These developers has spent years on making their plugins good. Even if you knew how to program (do you?), you must also have the knowledge of emulation (which is kinda hard, so do you have it?), AND lastly you have to put down lots, lots, lots and lots of work into it to make it run good.

how do I join the development team
*cough* *cough*

If you feel qualified to add something to plugins, then download the source of Rices plugin and make some worthwhile ammendments.

And to be totally honest Glide64 is one of the best plugins available for N64 emulation, as such I feel the usage of Glide for the API was totally justified. In particular as Hacktarux's quite frankly superb wrapper makes it work great on non 3DFX cards.

I feel qualified to do anything I set my mind to sir.

source code doesn't exist for the beta 10 release of rice video plugin
or I would have already went that direction.

Programming is easy when you have your scooby doo decoder ring ;)

Another thing is development tools are not always easy to aquire
and sometimes it takes lots of money , I have to ask myself it is worth
the trouble for something as simple as this ...

I feel all the emulators programmers out there that rely on zilmer and jabo
core code have no real right to boast anything ...

If I were going to be serious I would start with the emulator it's self
and make that more ( user friendly )

Some things are kept in secret some are not
zilmer obviously doesn't think he's breaking any laws
neither do I , open source makes things better
and people are so into stuffing their pockets these days
instead of producing quality.

I have a slight resentment against you for treating me like I'm not capable
of doing the job but I'll get over that ...

What programming experience do you have? You haven't done anything but bitch and whine in most of your posts. Insulting authors and having the audacity to claim you could do better.

I have a slight resentment towards eijits all and sundry ;) Don't take offense.

Right... but even so, things are hard.

No, it's not. Programming is one of the most hazardous tasks to be done when it comes to computers.

Another thing is development tools are not always easy to aquire
and sometimes it takes lots of money , I have to ask myself it is worth

Well, there ARE free compilers out there afaik.

I feel all the emulators programmers out there that rely on zilmer and jabo

Oh, so you say that their plugins are worthless piece of code? Mind you that even a plugin is a daunting task to write, and they've put lots and lots of effort into it! Perhaps you should try writing one first before whining about it...

If I were going to be serious I would start with the emulator it's self
and make that more ( user friendly )
Programming an emulator is nothing compared to a normal win32 program, mind you. So, yeah, right, I'll check back with you in a year and see how your emu is doing.

Some things are kept in secret some are not
zilmer obviously doesn't think he's breaking any laws
neither do I , open source makes things better
What is this spew of nonsense? Things are hidden? Zilmar breaking laws? Are you referring to that emulators are illegal? Open source makes things better? Hah! Think again. Not necessarily so! Closed source can work just as good, which jabo and zilmar certainly have proved!

and people are so into stuffing their pockets these days
instead of producing quality.
Utter nonsense! They put a lot of quality into the emulation! They do this in their free time. And some things like gui might not be so important to them, because it's not what's important in an emulator!

I have a slight resentment against you for treating me like I'm not capable
of doing the job but I'll get over that ...
Well, it is to be expected when you come in here sprouting nonsense in all directions.

Glide isn't dead dead dead! LOL!

Because I can enjoy Gilde 64 only if I can get a properly working Voodoo video card. It seems like I may have accidently damaged my Voodoo 3 3000 AGP video card. :yucky:

If I had a nickle for every person that told me I couldn't do something
I'd be rich beyond my wildest dreams.

I don't have time for anyone who doesn't wish to see me move
forward.

I've never been one to back down from anything and codeing is no different.

I don't have to justify my posistion to anyone.

It would sure by nice if just once someone would say , yes steve
I think you could do it and I encourage you in your efforts
instead of telling me how inadiquit I am.

but I suppose aking for that is like asking the sun to rise in the west.

I don't mind the critics tho , becauses every now n then it's good to deflate the ego ..

as for the people who wrote plugins for project 64 I say they were just like me
ambitious and not satisfied with the way things were so they set out
to improve on things.

one can't even get directx sdk now without an authenticated windows xp
unless they get it from someone ...

but again I say don't look at what one can't do , look at what one CAN do.

and YES I take full audacity to claim I can do better because there are several who have.

you say you'll see how my emulator is doing in a year ?
well I say thats a missleading argument because I may decide
to work on the emulator or I may decide to just work on the plugins.

the world is mine for the takeing.

On with the programming

I thought about posting my progress here but that would be off topic
When I'm ready I'll post about progress here ( maybe )

5-19-05 1:18 am

Begain aquireing information on the R4300i 64bit Risc CPU

Obtaining Op Code information and gaining a full understanding of the
N64 Console system. I was pleased to find there is loads of information
directly related to doing just that and even some stuff to get a basic
emulator up and running ....

the old guy
look, no one is saying you cant do what you want. But cutting other proven authors down in the process is only going to get you flamed. The people on these boards have a deep respect for these guys. They do this out of love for their craft, not for money or fame , so i think they deserve some respect.
Best of luck to you in your endeavors. Hopefully at some point you will come to understand just how hard this coding business can be. Its not something you can just read a book about and do it.

Then prove to us that you can! You come in here boasting that you can do it while we have NO evidence whatsoever of what you've done. We don't know how good a programmer you are, even. Doing an emulator is not a casual thing, nor is it easy!

as for the people who wrote plugins for project 64 I say they were just like me
ambitious and not satisfied with the way things were so they set out

Perhaps they just wanted to write a plugin for fun? Ever thought of that?

Hehe, yes I find that funny... but then again, there are ways to pass such validation tests!

This just hows how you misinterpret posts. By this I was basically telling you that I'd check back with you in a year because emulators take time to write! You won't get anywhere in a day, nor a week. Perhaps not even a month. It takes a long time to even get a single game running!

I have never intended to slander any author of anything
if that was the impression then you have my apollogies.

when I say a plugin is bad , I mean it's not suitable for my needs.

I'm not doing this out of ego , I'm here because I felt I could offer input
on the subject of emulators and what they need to run on Nvidia cards

Instead of telling me how hard stuff is , why don't you try telling me
something more positive like , ( you could do this or that to get going )

I feel it's a violation of the forum rules to even be talking about
makeing another emulator or plugins ...
