hey ,

i just clean formatted and reinstalled everything cuz i had a problem when playing any full screen games on my computer ex: Unreal 2003 , RTC wolfenstein, etc.. it tries to go full screen, then a second after, im returned to the desktop with my game minimized on the taskbar....

that said, after reinstalling my computer , i tested and everything was fine, except after i decided to reinstall PJ64 1.5 ... now it does the same thing, it kinda sucks , cuz it took me a whole afternoon to reinstall ... :(

i tried unstalling PJ64 without success, now im stuck with the same problem i had before ??? any help would be really appreciated , thanks!

heres what i have:
MSI 845 Ultra
512MB DDR
GeForce 2 MX400 - Nvidia 40.72 (also tried the 30.xx)
SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 - newest drivers
ATI TV Wonder PCI
Windows XP Pro SP1

directx

This seems related to DirectX - probably some setting or other is getting hosed perhaps due to a problem with your graphics card. Reinstalling your OS seems like a drastic solution.

Have you installed the latest DirectX (maybe it is in XP SP1, I dunno)? If so (or after doing so) use dxdiag.exe (somewhere in your Windows directory) to make sure DirectX is happy.

Does PJ64 work in windowed mode?

Search this forum for XP threads. XP seems to be problematic for a number of people. Maybe someone else has this problem and has found a solution.

Good luck from a happy Win2K user!

hey returno,

it may be a directX problem like you said , the latest DirectX (8.1)is integrated in SP1. I tried running the dxdiag, and all the tests, everything is running ok.

i forgot to mention that it is not doing it all the time, it does that like 80% of the time.but thanks for the help, ill try to reinstall DX if i can :)

"It" is what? PJ64? Or dxdiag? Or your other games? Maybe all of the above.

Something flakey like that smells like your graphics card, other hardware, or drivers. Try updating your graphics card driver, your motherboard driver(s), sound card drivers - everything that wouldn't be in an XP SP. It's a longshot, but maybe easier than reinstalling your OS...

Did you check Device Manager for conflicts?

The PC Wiz
Huh?

If you see it minimized (on the task bar), try to maximize it
by clicking on where you see it on the taskbar, because if
a crash is occuring, usually you don't see it on the task bar.

sorry i posted a new thread instead of clicking on reply

PJ64 is doing it all the time, games almost all the time , DXDIAG shows everything's ok at anytime.

i have re-updated all my drivers, to the latest, even the intel chipset drivers. Still doing it , except that when i reinstalled the nvidia drivers it seemed to work ok for a couple of reboots.

all i can say is that as far as i can remember, before SP1 everything was ok . and i discarded my old CD. now i only have SP1 integrated with the installation.

damn microsoft ... or is it really a graphic card problem ?! but even if it were , wouldnt there be a blue screen or something similar to tell that an error occured ?

updates!

i tried running DXDIAG at the same time i was running a game that went minimez on the taskbar, heres what i get on the Direct3D test, the screen goes blank , and instatly comes back on the dxdiag window saying : "You cancelled the test by pressing a key" , but no key were pressed ???

i cant see what would be the problem, i mean, it cant be the keyboard ? theres no specific driver for it... plus if a key was deffective, i would hear some kind of beeps when booting...

I've had a similar problem (particularly with RTC Wolfenstein). I found that the cause was a bad glidex.dll file in my system32 directory (I was playing around with different glide wrapper types/configs for another emulator). Try seeing if this file is in your system folder. If it is, move it to some non-critical folder and see if that helps things.

thanks for all help

î think i finally found the problem... seems like Norton Personnal Firewall 2003 was interferring somehow with Direct 3D ... i wanted to try Zone Alarm instead, and woah bang boom , everythings *seems* to work fine now. its been 5 dayz and i didnt get any D3D errors.

so thanks, and im gonna boycott Norton from now on :D
