Linux + Mplayer

I'm a newbie and I don't know how to install Mplayer, can someone help me? I was looking in the website but I can't understand very well about all the stuff I gotta do:linux:

You have to untar the sources, do a tar -xvjf MPlayer-xxxxx.tar.bz2,
cd cd into the mplayer folder, then do a ./configure --gui (to enable the gui version), then do make and make install.

If youre using RedHat or Mandrake you need to have the gtk-dev rpm installed for the gui to work.

uncompress the sources (someone already posted the exact command), and read the documentation CAREFULLY. it's very detailed.
