Can't get controller to work

Hello, have tried to find answer to this ? by reading other posts, hope I didn't miss it.

I'm trying to use a playstation 2 controller, using a smartjoy dual plus adapter. Under options: configure controller plugin: It shows the smart joy dual plus adapter, and the controller is plugged in box is checked. But I am unable to use the controller or adjust the button setup. This may sound stupid but how do you set the buttons, if thats my problem, I try clicking thr box beside the

L: Left

and it just put SO in the place of Left. I hope I am doing something wrong and my controller will work. I hate the directional pad on almost every controller other than ps2. I have version 1.6 of Project64, let me know if you need more info.

smart joy dual plus doesn't work properly with Jabo's input plugin.
please change input plugin to N-rage's (included).

Thanks for the quick reply. It still won't work correctly. I'm now able to attempt to change buttons but it won't reconize any buttons I push on controller. Gonna try their "N-rage's" help site. I'm still open to any suggestions.
