PRESS RELEASE: LG Electronics to Launch First Dual-Format High-Definition Disc Player

LG Electronics(LG), a leader in consumer electronics and mobile communications, announced that it will launch the world's first dual-format high-definition disc player, capable of playing both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD content.

The unit will be released in the United States in early 2007. Details will be provided at the 2007 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), held January 8–11 in Las Vegas.

LG expects this technological breakthrough to end the confusion and inconvenience of competing high-definition disc formats for both content producers and consumers

Guess you can have a Wii and an HD movie station for the same price as a PS3.

You forget to mention source and price.
But universal players have been expected for some time now. When universal players come down to an acceptable price range, I'm sure Sony will have problems selling the console as a blu-ray player. Though it will still sell as a games machine.

Then there's the whole spec thingy. Current BD players does not support the entire Blu-ray spec, and for such an expensive price, that is bad news. There are already movies out there with things the players doesn't support! I wonder if the same applies to the PS3...

Because Sony is touting the PS3 as a Blu-ray player. Which is part of the high price.
If Sony can't sell it as a Blu-ray player, then will people buy it for the high price and will Sony win this generation's console wars with all the competition?
Of course it's going to sell, but it will lose its cheap blu-ray player sales, and is it really worth to pay at least $200 more to get the same kind of machine as the Xbox 360? We'll get a Revolution + 360 for the same or less price than the PS3, so why get the PS3? It adds up to lower sales for Sony.

And now this...

Enter Warner's finally-commercialized Total HD discs, the hybrid double-sided Blu-ray HD DVD discs we originally heard about being patented are now being commercialized and introduced at CES next week. Of course, so long as some studios don't release in both formats on the same disc (say, for example, Sony Pictures Entertainment), this disc actually hinders the unwitting user who buys content that isn't double-sided, thinking that Blu-ray and HD DVD formats are no longer relevant in day to day buying decisions.

I was going to buy the HD-DVD add-on for my 360, but I decided to wait for a HD/BR combo.

Only thing is though...

You say that you can have a Wii and a combo player for the same price as a PS3 - have there actually been any prices released or estimated yet for these combo players? BR alone is very expensive, and so I can't see the combo-drives being very cheap at all.

The thing of not allowing porn to go Blu-Ray may very well make it drown, IMO, HD-DVD is the way to go.

The only dual-player costs about $1300. They're all expensive machines now. But we have to remember that specs for BD and HD-DVD aren't exactly finalized right now. At least BD isn't I think. Anyhow, players are still adding features, so there's no guarantee that they'll be compatible with tomorrow's movies. The dual player doesn't even support iHD (script for HD-DVD), so it is a wise move to wait for any player as of yet. The PS3 will probably not play tomorrow's movies either. Blu-ray players have less features than HD-DVD players to my knowledge.

The Whole HD thing is a bit nebulous at the moment. Since many companies are relying on that to fix there slump from competition instead of moving slowly they bet there existance on the new HD formats. Well most people could care less about that at the moment. And the DVD - > HD format systems work sufficiently well that many consumers aren't buying HD stuff. So .. too much too soon my guess.

In the end, IMO, HD is not a need, i see no hype and no request for a better media to run movies than DVD, overkill, not more than taht.

Most people don't realize because they don't have HD TVs. When that picks up, they're going to see a big difference, I'm thinking. But then again, I don't think the casual customer is going to give a second eye to a player (which looks like DVD) for $500+.

Another overkill at the moment, i live in a 700 million inhabitabts country and the TV signal is mostly crap, most ppl do not have cable and the greatest sellr is the 20" set, so for me it is useless.

Yes, it's a high tech country with lots of cable and sattelites and top-o'-the-notch technology, though lacking HD channels. Many people have HD TVs, but many do not. Same with US. You are not going to see a difference between DVD & HD-DVD/Blu-ray on small, Non-HD TVs. Plus it would lack an HDMI port to plug it in. Give me a good reason to get them new players?
I don't see anyone seeing those new players as anything but expensive DVD players.
