PJ64: 1.5 SP1 = great... 1.6 = crash and burn?

I used to use PJ64 1.5 SP1 all the time, and it was hands-down, the best N64 emulator I've ever used. It's fast, accurate, and works with many, many games.

Needless to say, I was excited to see that the team had once again started working on a new version, and very happy to see the release of 1.6. When I started actually using 1.6 however, it very often crashed... most of the time throwing my entire system into a loop, pausing the video and screeching a very high pitched noise over and over, which could not be stopped without a system restart. This problem seems to happen randomly, and happens when I play just about any game, at random times.

Between my using 1.5 and 1.6, I had upgraded my video card from a 9700 Pro to a GeForce 6800 GT... so I figured that perhaps my new hardware was just not compatible with the new program. I am sure all my drivers are up to date. I had pretty much given up on the idea of using PJ64 to emulate N64 games any more, but then I happened upon one of my old backup folders and found the PJ64 1.5 SP1 installer. On a whim, I installed it and left it running for quite a while with the volume off - to see if it was stable.

Turns out it is - works like a charm, and is still my favorite N64 emulator. So I come to the conclusion that whatever is the problem has happened since the program went to version 1.6. So what's the deal? Anyone else having these random freeze / crash problems?

For reference, my system specs are as follows:
CPU: P4 3.0 Ghz HT
RAM: 2Gb PC3200 (dual channel)
VID: GeForce 6800 GT 256Mb AGP
SND: Sound Blaster 16 PCI

I'll see what I can do... not looking forward to another earsplitting crash though. I am pretty sure that all my drivers are completely up to date though... I just don't understand why the program could be stable in 1.5 for just about all games I try, and then start crashing and locking up with 1.6... just seems that something that was working in 1.5 is broken in 1.6.

My post count is low but I've been a PJ64 user for over 4 years. I won't try to tell you 1.6 is just as stable as 1.5 was because I haven't used 1.6 anywhere near as much. But I can say I haven't had any trouble like you describe. And I'm on a fairly old KT266a, Athlon 1700 based system, using a Radeon 9600pro.
