EmuOS - The Emulation OS

Please read the whole thread here.
I've found it very impressive, so I decided to post a thread here.

I've been visiting the main site for a while, but due to the recent project I decided to join the forums so I could hopefully post information about my current project, EmuOS. I hope you find yourself interested in the project and that you'll support myself and the staff. ^_^
--------------------------------------------------

I’ve pulled a few software programmers together and still getting more staff to make an emulator-only operating system. This system will be easily installed on any PC as a secondary OS that uses only 3-4GB of a hard drive for the OS itself, emulator packages, and save state information. ROMs and CD/DVD games can then be run directly from the CD or DVD drive on your PC. After the OS is completed and most of the bugs are worked out it should be able to emulate games with only a 10% margin of error at most for a PlayStation2 game on a 2.2GHz processor PC. This is mainly due to the fact the system will only utilize drivers required for emulation and nothing else.

The OS itself is currently being assembled using Linux source code; in the meantime we’ll be using a reassembled Fedora Core 4 as a basis for the project. After a few tweaks, the system should be as easy to use as Windows and any PC user (novice or expert) will be able to use the system.

This distribution of Linux will be known as “EmuOS”, and will be a pioneer in the Gamer Specific OS field. Hopefully, our first beta will be released in the first quarter of 2006.

Mmh, yes SOUNDS great, but it's a LINUX build, so we have only working linux emus, and please say me some great linux emus out there...
And I'm beta tester of a lot of emus, but they are all WINDOWS based, so no way for me in using it...
But great idea!

ofcourse i'm skeptic about it. But since it's linux I really doub how well plugin support will be... Most (good) gfx plugin's are written for windows (Using D3D or OpenGL). But then again, i don't know what emulators they have in mind... Nextgen stuff or retro arcade.

/me remembers the time he used gamebooster to speedup bleem and other psx emulators

Excellent idea, but we need emulators that run on Linux. The EmuOS team is trying to make their own emulators, but they are asking for fairly complete emulators that run on Linux. The only one I know that can run perfectly in this OS is GCube, but it's dead although it has a source code anybody can use.

- Newly registered member? check
- Makes grand announcement with nothing to show for it? check
- Promising big, unrealistic results (double-speed PS2 emulation just by removing OS overhead)? check
- Recruiting "staff" for his "team" of "programmers"? check

All signs of a fake. What's striking is the ratio of optimists to skeptics at NGEmu. Had this "news" been posted here, the guy would've been torn to pieces almost immediately.

Got to agree with Allnatural, I would love to be proven wrong though. I just don't think the OS overhead accounts for that much of a performance decrease.

This has to be the biggest amount of BS I've read in a while.

Almost makes me think of Reirom.

The claims are a bit rediculous. If processor speed and memory barely affect the performance of the next-gen emulators, then the OS overhead will not affect it either - as its mostly the same sort of thing. People who have tested these emulators already have differing amounts of OS overhead, yet the framerates achieved are always in a similar ballpark with PS2 emulation and above. The bottleneck is clearly not in the system or OS.

Just read his LiveJournal.... Scary. The HTML on the page is crap too.
Before or after his latest rant? He seems to be referring to some of our posts, yours especially. I hope so, lol. The comments are priceless.

This is also good for a laugh.

What is it with these people who don't know how to program, come up with insane ideas, and then wish to recruit programmers? :p

I love the way he blames my screen res for his bad HTML skills :D Nothing at all to do with res - IE displays it fine, so does Opera, Firefox doesn't. Checked the validity, lots of errors. Though I will say my HTML skills are definately much worse. And of course not using valid HTML doesn't mean you are a crap programmer.

Re: which service controls sound in Windows - I'll give him a clue if he is reading this:
Windows audio service

The comments are par for the course with a lot of web blogging services - well intentioned but with flawed subject knowledge.

If he wants to shut everyone up who has rightfully doubted his flawed scheme, then all he needs to do is to bring out an OS that provides a speedup. Heck I'd give him mucho credit if he manages to eek say 10-20% extra out of it.

The cardinal rules of emulation programming:

1. Unless you're already an established member of the "scene," never, ever announce a project unless you have some code ready to show the world. Even a barely working beta...anything that people can tool around with. Otherwise, you keep the project under wraps.

2. When you have released some code, expect no end of skepticism. People will search every nook and cranny, poke around with hex editors, try to find any crack or seam that may indicate a fake. Don't take offense to this; it's just the way the "scene" works. If your code is legitimate, it will be declared as such.

I'll give EncodedFATE some credit. Unlike most (proven) fakes, he hasn't given the "since no believes me I'm not going to release it" line. There's still a chance we'll have to eat crow. ;)

LMAO, that was the best bullshit ever!

Of course, the idea of building an OS for emulation wasn't the worst. But the way he was talking, saying that PS2 emulators would run faster in a 2.2 GHz, and the OS major dependancy was on the emulation drivers... affffff.
I was wondering how he would build that 4GB for the OS in too short time, how they would distribute the package (he was saying that it will be free and open-source, but how he could distribute that big amount of GBs anyway? Bittorent? ¬¬"), how they would fight against big enterprises, and a lot of thing that he didn't explain well, just covered the lack of ideas with bullcrap.

Interesting was the way he ever talked about the project though. always showing unlimited confidence.

Maybe he has the code already, who knows? Until it's proven it's a fake or until it is released, I'll be optimistic. Nothing is impossible. Of course, I'll have trouble downloading 4GB.

Assuming the code was finished already, why did he say that it "will be released in the 'first quarter of 2006' " and don't post any possibly dates? And if OS was finished, what is he waiting to release it?
Also, he hasn't showed any screenshots of the project, not other staff member of the project has talked with us, and he even not posted here.

And think: 4GB is big. Not all people can download such files through the internet. Even with broadband, the time to download it could be enormous. And, if not internet, is there another way to the package be distribuited?
DVDs? But, would they spend their money burning DVDs for all people interested in the OS? What about the people who aren't their neighboors? :p

And c'mon... he said:

As for the minimal specs;
2.0 GHz Processor
256MB RAM
4GB HDD
CD/DVD Drive
Radeon 9250/GeForce 4
Onboard sound card

So technically... a cheap Dell Dimension 2400 PC with an new video card could run this OS with just slight lag while emulating certain systems.
Even with Dreamcast a GeForce 4 is not all recomended due its lack of Pixel Shaders. That guy could be more intelligent and ask for heavier sys requeriments.

mmm, the spiral continues over there... (which there? what spiral? wtf are you talking about? wtf is your problem?)

And to think, he didn't even have the decency to name it "EMUALLSYSTEMS"...

Personally, I'd be more worried if these things stopped showing up, I would have to go see a shrink, fore it would suggest I had lost my sanity.

Yeah, Allnatural, I too was suprised by how many people actually believed this could be done. Removing OS overhead will do nothing, as it's a non-existant bottleneck.

The guy is full of shit, he constantly pulled numbers out of his ass that were completely impossible, and I really doubt he even had any "work" to make good of such claims.. his immature reactions to (one or two) skeptics make it all the worse.

Not to mention that he uses Livejournal and believes anime is life, that should raise the BS flag quickly.

I laughed so hard at this one though: claiming to have a wife and children while actively having an account at okcupid LOL {}:{

Jakob: Reirom? :D
